Happy 5 Years

Today has been 5 years since the man I love and I went to the temple and were married for time and for eternity. No "til death do you part" for us:)

John and I met in May of 2005 at church in Grande Prairie. I had moved there the month before and John had moved up that weekend. My first impression of John was "Wow, that's an ugly tie", ha ha. It didn't take long before John was the one driving me to all of our YSA activities and we were always hanging out. We became good friends pretty fast. It wasn't hard to figure out that John had a thing for me, but it took me a little while longer to figure out how I felt about him.

We had our first date in August. We went out to dinner, had Booster Juice and went for a walk in the park, put Oreo cookies all over the windows of the missionaries' car and had some hot chocolate at Tim Horton's. It was so much fun.

A couple of weeks later John invited me to go and visit his sister and her family for the weekend in Edmonton, since most of the rest of our friends had to work for the long weekend. I was happy to have something to do and went. That Sunday I was fasting to know what I should do about John (basically if I should date him seriously or not). As I stood in the hallway looking at him with his nephew on my shoulder falling asleep, I got my answer in bold full force. This was the man I was supposed to marry. (I also found out later that at the same time with the situation with his nephew, that's when John knew that he was in love with me.) Later that day as we were sitting on the steps of the temple, I let him know that I knew that. So that was the day that John and I became an official couple.

Here is the part where we fit the stereotypical "Mormon dating to engagement time". 2 days later, back in Grande Prairie, John had time to fast about it as well, and proposed to me at the river valley. This was September 7th. It sounds fast, but we both had been told by the Lord that this is what was right, so what was the point in waiting?

We weren't in the same city for a lot of our engagement. I moved in with his youngest sister and her family for a month and a half and got to know his family better, and then went and lived with my mum until the week before the wedding.

On New Year's Eve morning, after a week of a serious head cold, I met up with John at the front of the Cardston Alberta Temple. We were sealed to each other so that our marriage would not end with the death of one of us. Being married without having a single member of your family there in the room with you isn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but I'm very glad that right from day 1 our marriage was an eternal marriage, a 3 way covenant between us and the Lord. I have never ever felt regret over that decision.

Of course, in our 5 years of marriage we've had some ups and some downs. We have been blessed with 2 beautiful boys and are currently 27 weeks pregnant with our third and last child, another boy. We've moved as a married couple 4 times. We have held each other through severe PPD and painful flare ups of mental illness, and marvelled together when we found something that works for mine. We held each other again this year after hearing that I would never have a baby girl of my own to take home from the hospital and are still becoming stronger people as we come more and more to terms with this. Through it all we've had each other and we've had the Lord, and that's what matters the most to us.

John and I may not be the perfect looking couple or have everything together all of the time, but he's perfect for me and I love him so much. I can't imagine my life without him and have a hard time putting into words what he means to me. I have been so blessed to have been married to this wonderful man for the past 5 years, and am SO thankful that we have an eternity left together. Happy First Five Years Of Eternity, John!

Attitude of Gratitude Day

I almost didn't remember to do this today, since we spent most of the day on the road.

Christmas was good. We spent it with John's family. The boys really seemed to enjoy it, except for Caleb puking on Sunday night.

Anyway, I'd love to do a full Christmas update, but I just want to do the Attitude of Gratitude for today and then in a few days I'll probably write about Christmas.

1) I am grateful that we made it home safely today. We saw a few accidents in Calgary (one looked quite bad) and I'm so thankful that we weren't part of any of them. I'm also glad that I remembered to pray for a safe trip home. I always feel better after we've prayed to travel safely.

2) I am grateful for a man that I feel is the best father-in-law in the world. He's always there for me and helps me to keep my cool when my anxiety level is shooting through the roof. I really REALLY lucked out in the father-in-law department.

3) I am grateful for the book that John gave me for Christmas. It's 'Toss the Guilt and Catch the Joy: A Woman's Guide to a Better Life' by Merrilee Boyack. I have 2 other books that she's written (Strangling Your Husband is NOT an Option: A Practical Guide to Dramatically Improving Your Marriage and The Parenting Breakthrough: A Real-Life Plan to Teach Your Kids to Work, Save Money, and Be Truly Independent) and I love them. I love how down to earth she sounds and that she doesn't make herself out to be perfect or anywhere close to it. I'm about 2/3 done this new book and it's been great. I'm so thankful that John bought it for me.

Christmas Eve

I bombed on our family activity yesterday. However, Caleb and I spent a lot of time cleaning the house and getting everything ready, which means that I spent the day teaching my child that it's important to do housework. I think that's more important than sitting down and playing yet another board game with him (we've played quite a few in the last month).

Not too much else to say right now. Today is Christmas Eve, and we'll just be singing some Christmas songs on our way down to Magrath. I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas tomorrow.

1 MORE DAY:)

Yesterday, Today and Attitude of Gratitude

Wow! What a big day for my blog. This is my 200th post! I'm not going to be doing much of anything special, though. Also, according to my ticker on the side of my blog, there are officially less than 100 days until Brettley is due to enter this world.

Yesterday we read How The Grinch Stole Christmas together. The boys sat so well through the entire thing, I was really impressed. I also read Cat in the Hat to them since Caleb saw that story when I was opening up to our Christmas one and wanted to hear both. Have you ever noticed how your mouth almost seems exhausted after reading 2 Dr Seuss stories in a row?

Last night was date night in our house since Saturday is Christmas Day. John and I played Lord of the Rings Monopoly (and I totally beat him) and ate strawberry rhubarb pie. Lots of casual fun:) I'm glad that we made sure to do our date night this week even though the weekend is booked up.

Today we are playing a board game together and drinking hot chocolate. This will have to be done during the morning since I have to fast during the afternoon to do my glucose screening at 5:20, which means I will be gone until 6:30 at the earliest. I'll definitely be bringing a book with me.

Today also happens to be Attitude of Gratitude day, so here we go:

1) I am grateful for an amazing man who was born in the humblest of circumstances, lived as a perfect example, suffered pain so great as he took upon himself our sins, infirmities, afflictions and more that he bled from every pore, went through the perfected (oh yes, the Romans had pretty much perfected it) painful death of crucifixion and rose again from death on the third day. How can you not be grateful for such a man at any time?

2) I am grateful that I've gained more perspective and am learning to stop wishing my life away. John and I were talking about this yesterday and we realized just how much of our time we spend wishing it away. It's sad, really.

3) I am grateful for this Christmas season, where everything seems to radiate a spirit of festive cheer and people tend to treat each other a lot better than they do the rest of the year. Christmas time always seems to have a magical feel to it, and I love it. I have a carol I listen to by Anne Murray and my favourite line from it is "Thank goodness this season will never grow old". That's how I feel. It hasn't mattered yet how old I am, this season is still so special each and every year.

2 MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:) :)

Lights & The Grinch

I discovered last night that Edmonton is really not big on Christmas lights. I realize that I don't have any, but I also don't have an electrical outlet anywhere on the front of my house so there isn't much I can do about that. I have a wreath on my door though. But yeah, there was next to nothing in the way of Christmas lights. Ty was excited just to see any lights though and Caleb ended up falling asleep.

We didn't do very much yesterday, my cold is kind of knocking me out a bit. I'm hoping that today will be the worst day of it. Tonight we're going to read How The Grinch Stole Christmas as a family.

3 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:) :) :)

Epic Failure, Lights and FHE Board

So watching Joy to the World was an epic failure. Neither of the kids would cooperate, so we watched a whole 2 minutes of it. Caleb did manage to make it through a family council, though.

Tonight we'll be getting groceries and picking up library books and doing our family activity for the day, to drive around and look at Christmas lights. I figure as long as I buy the boys some chocolate milk to drink that they'll be up for this one. Ty in particular really loves to see lights when we're driving around.

Last night John and I made name tags for our brand new Family Home Evening board. I forgot to mention that my mum had made us one for Christmas. I love it and I'm really excited to use it. Our tags aren't high class right now, but I have a plan to get some more permanent ones eventually. These will do for now.

That's about it for today, I think. I've got a bit of a cold, but I'm trying to down water like I'm a fish and it seems to be helping to flush it through me a lot faster.

4 MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:) :) :)

Christmas Dinner #2 & Church

Our dinner with my dad went really well. Caleb got a new tie, a Mario Kart Wii shirt, some guitar pyjamas and uDraw tablet and studio for the Wii. Ty got a pair of jeans, 3 shirts, a zip up hoodie, Handy Manny pyjamas, a Caillou DVD, a Veggie Tales DVD and the Toy Story 3 DVD.

Church was good yesterday. We made it through all 3 meetings, which was nice. I love Relief Society and I'm always sad when I'm not feeling up to sitting through it. Caleb got a book from his Sunbeams teacher. He will miss her so much next year, he was very attached to her. He will be a CTR 4 next year and Ty will stay in nursery.

Today's activity is to watch the Joy to the World DVD and eat popcorn, so that's what we'll be doing for FHE tonight.

Well, I guess that's it for today. 5 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Christmas Presents and What Not

The boys got some great presents yesterday. Caleb got some art supplies, a hunting jacket, hat and mitts and a kids digital camera, among other stuff. Ty got some Caillou books, a hunting jacket, a Thomas that follows a flashlight and a kids mp3 stereo. John got some stuff for Magic and painting miniatures and a few other things. I got a nice purple themed Pandora charm bracelet, some slip on boots and a pasta maker. Our big gift wasn't in yet, so we'll get it the next time that we see Mum, but we're getting an upright carpet cleaner. Plus, we still have our stockings from her to open on Christmas morning, and the stockings in my family are definitely the best of all of the gifts.

We had a really good meal. I put bacon in with the stuffing and it turned out amazing! The funeral potatoes were really good too, my step-dad liked them the best. However, we were all so full from dinner than none of us had room for dessert before they left. The boys and I tried some apple berry cobbler before bed though, and it was super yummy.

Caleb's pink eye is so much better and thankfully no longer contagious, so he can go to church today:) There's no goop and it doesn't look swollen at all, even though I'm pretty sure that most of the swelling came from him rubbing it so much anyway.

This evening we're doing our dinner and presents with my dad. I'm not going all out again for this one. My dad is happy just to come and have a meal with the kids, which makes my life easy. We're having a lasagna, garlic bread and caesar salad (I think that may be Caleb's favourite food). I know what the boys are getting from my dad because I picked all of it out, but it will still be exciting to see them open it all. John and I already have our present from my dad. My pots and pans were falling apart a few months ago, so we got it early. He gave us a brand new set of way better quality pots and pans.

Well, I guess that's about all for now, except for our biggest news of all:) My brother proposed to his girlfriend yesterday and she said yes! I am so excited for them. She is awesome and I'm very lucky and happy to be getting her as my sister-in-law.

6 MORE DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Bookmarks and Christmas Dinner

Caleb ended up helping me with the chocolate pecan bars anyway last night and during the day I had the boys colour me some bookmarks and I used some tape to waterproof them. It wasn't Christmas related, but they had fun.

Caleb is now working on spelling Tyrell. He's doing really good.

Today we're having our Christmas dinner and presents with my mum and step-dad. Which reminds me that I really need to get down there soon and get the stuffing made and into the slow cooker. We're having ham since my mum and I aren't turkey fans at all. We're also having funeral potatoes, corn, caesar salad and some dessert (chocolate pecan bars and berry crumble). It should be a good day, except for the fact that Caleb has pink eye. That's not so much fun.

1 WEEK (7 DAYS) UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!

Brettley, Santa and Caleb

Yesterday I heard Brettley's heartbeat and he kicked the fetal doppler. Next week I get to go and drink the sugary orange pop for the gestational diabetes screen. That's about all that's going on there.

The boys and I made Santa crafts before supper. Ty kept trying to smear white glue everywhere, but Caleb did really well. He loves making crafts so much. I'm not really sure what we're going to do today. We were supposed to be making chocolate pecan bars, but I don't have my cooking spray until after supper tonight when John gets groceries, so I'm trying to think of what to do. We'll think of something, I'm sure. I think a project I need to do in the new year is to get a decent box of craft supplies for them organized.

I also forgot Caleb's big news for this last week is that he has learned how to spell his name without help. He is SO proud of himself. Now I just have to work on teaching him how to write it. He has issues with writing letters, pen control doesn't come easy for him at all. I'm not sure what to do about that.

8 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!

Stuff And Things

I guess I officially do NOT know how to take it easy. I spent most of my day yesterday cleaning and shoveling (twice). Anyway, I did put on Forgotten Carols for the kids, but they were not interested at all. Oh well, maybe next year. Today I have a prenatal appointment and then when we get home we'll do the Santa craft. Caleb will be so excited, he LOVES doing crafts.

As today is Thursday, it's also Attitude of Gratitude day. So here we go:

1) I am grateful that put heat on my back a lot during the night kept my back functioning pretty well today. It's a trick I'm sure I'll need to use more in the coming months and I'm really glad that I found that it works when I did.

2) I am grateful that I will get to have a Christmas dinner with my mum & Bob, then one with my dad and then one with John's parents this year. It will be nice to have something special with everyone. I will really miss getting to see my brother, though.

3) I am grateful for the tin of Almond Roca that John bought me yesterday for cleaning the house. I loves me some Almond Roca:)

Anyway, that's about all for now, I can't believe we're in the single digits for the Christmas countdown. 9 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Change of Plans and Forgotten Carols

We had a change of plans for our activity yesterday. Instead of the Santa craft we read 'The Forgotten Carols: A Christmas Miracle For Isaac and Eliza' and listened to the songs that go with the book. We also watched on you tube The Nativity to the music of Breath of Heaven. I enjoyed it, Ty kind of liked it and Caleb barely endured it. I guess you can't win them all.

Today we're going to watch our Forgotten Carols DVD. John and I watched it a few weeks ago, but the boys have never seen it. I don't know if they'll like it as much as I do, but I definitely can feel the spirit every time that I watch it, so I think it's a great activity.

Anyway, not much else is new. I'm still taking things easy, especially after I woke up with a really bad pain in my back this morning. I have a VERY hard time taking it easy, especially with 2 young kids in the house, but I'm really trying.

A Short One

So we decorated our gingerbread house but didn't get pictures because the kids started eating it before it was even done. It was great fun, though:)

Today I am taking things super easy because my body and Brett don't seem to like it in the slightest when I do anything other than minimal cleaning. The boys and I are going to hang out and later on we'll make Santa crafts.

Still looking for ideas on how to decorate a house for little cost, so if you have any please let me know. (Everyday decorating, not Christmas decorating)

Reading, Cleaning, Gingerbread House and Decorating

Last night I read 'The Night Before Christmas' to the boys. When we read Polar Express it was Ty that was really into sitting down and listening to the story, but not yesterday. Caleb, however, sat through the whole thing and gave lots of smiles. Also, at some point yesterday I managed to sprain my wrist somehow. I'm still not sure exactly how I did it, but it's definitely aching today. I'd planned on doing lots more cleaning today, but my wrist has other ideas. So I've been doing a fat load of nothing. Well, that's not entirely true. I did manage to get the downstairs bathroom totally scrubbed down before my wrist told me to knock it off. I also got the dishwasher unloaded, most of the dirty dishes put into it and made gifts for the sisters that I visit teach.

Our activity for tonight is to assemble a gingerbread house, take pictures of it and then each sample a piece. That should be interesting. Last year it was just Caleb and I putting it together. I applied the icing and he applied/ate the candies. I'm not artistically talented, so our gingerbread houses are never much to look at, but they always taste great, which is the part that the kids will care about the most.

I'm also trying to think of cheap ways to decorate my house in the new year, so if you have any tips, please let me know.

12 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Caleb's Back, Tub Cleaning and Belly

So I ended up having to stay home from Church with Caleb today. He fell while we were cleaning the chapel yesterday and scraped his back up, which I didn't know until I washed his back in the bathtub this morning and caused him to cry. He was hurting pretty bad so I let him stay home, but the deal was that he had to help me clean his room. (He spit chewed up carrots all over it) So we did that and then I cleaned our upstairs hallway and our upstairs bathroom. I tried something for my hard water stains on my tub that I read about way earlier this year on Feigning Fertility but hadn't actually gotten around to trying. So I spread a whole bottle of toilet bowl cleaner around my tub and let it sit for 45 minutes while the fan was going in there, during which I pigged out on junk food that I definitely should not have been eating. Anyway, I got back up to the bathroom which smelled somewhere in between the smell of sickly sweet bubble gum and spearmint. It was overwhelming, but I stuck it out. I proceeded to use a sponge to rinse off my tub. Notice I said RINSE, not 'scrub until my arms were ready to fall off and then scrub some more'. Long story short, there are no hard water stains left on my tub at all. It's amazing! So if you're reading this Ashley, THANK YOU!!! (For the record, I do realize that I just publicly admitted that I clean on Sundays)

Anyway, our activity for the day is to read 'The Night Before Christmas', which we'll do later once Ty wakes up from his nap. Also, I got some belly photos taken this morning, so here I am, in all my fat belly/butt glory, at 25 weeks:
Oh, 13 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Movies, Pizza and Food Bank

Yesterday we not only watched Rudolph, but also ended up doing a pizza picnic that night and watching How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I'd had a tiny bit of a flu all day and just wasn't up to making supper, so we skipped that activity up by a couple of weeks. I found another to take its place when the day comes.

Today we bought some extra groceries and put them in the food bank donation box. Before we went shopping I explained to Caleb that we were going to buy some groceries and give it to a place that helps people get food when they don't have enough money to buy food on their own. He seemed to like that idea, but had to make sure that Daddy had enough money to buy groceries for us. I assured him that Daddy had enough to buy groceries for us.

Well, that's about all for now because I need to go and have something to eat.

2 WEEKS (14 DAYS) UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Family Chain and Fatigue

Yesterday we put together Caleb's family chain. He got pretty bored with matching letters near the end, but did really good for most of it. Then we hung it up in his room. He's really proud of what he made.

Today we are watching a classic Christmas movie (he's choosing to watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer again).

As for me, I'm just really tired lately. Ty slept in and Caleb was willing to play quietly on my bedroom floor, so I got to sleep in until 9 this morning. I really needed it after I was falling asleep while sitting up by 4pm yesterday.

15 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!

Attitude of Gratitude, Paper Garland and Activity Days

It's Attitude of Gratitude Day!

1) I'm grateful for John who has been cleaning the house the last 2 nights as I've been out. A lot tends to slip when I'm pregnant, especially at this point where the most normal things cause me lots of hip and back pain, so it's been wonderful the last 2 nights to come home to a house that's even cleaner than I left it. I love my husband:)

2) This past week I've found a renewed appreciation for the plan of salvation and the sealing covenant. I can't go into why because it's a rather personal family matter to be putting up on my blog (at least at this point), but I can tell you that I am SOOOO glad right now that I have a knowledge of these things and I'm so grateful for the peace that they bring. It is so obvious through these things just how much our Heavenly Father really does love us and want nothing but the best for us.

3) I'm grateful for how happy the Christmas season makes me every year. There's a feeling that comes this time of year that I can't compare to much of anything else. It's amazing, I love it and I look forward to it every year. I'm also glad that Caleb has started picking up on it too (Ty just thinks it's great because he loves the lights on trees and houses).

*****

So yesterday the boys and I read the Polar Express book, which Ty loved, and then we watched the movie, which Caleb loved. They also watched Frosty The Snowman, Frosty Returns and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (all 3 are classic Christmas movies). Today we are making paper garland to decorate their room with. Ty has red strips and each one has the name of a family member (the boys' brothers, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins) on it. Caleb has the same in green. Ty will get to pick a strip out of his bag and Caleb will have to work on his letter recognition skills to find the name that matches from his bag. I'm excited that I found a way to work his "school" work into a craft. Hopefully he goes for it.

Also, I had Activity Days last night and it was the last night for one of my favourite girls. She earned her Faith in God award about a month ago, which made me really happy/proud. It has been wonderful to have her in Activity Days and I will miss her so much. She brought a cake to share with us and made me a wonderful card that I absolutely love. Now I don't have any girls moving up to Young Women until September.

Well, I should get going for now. 16 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS:)

Polar Express (Again) and the Party

The boys and I ended up not watching the movie yesterday because it was a really rotten day for me (it's just been a tough few days in general), so today we're going to watch the Polar Express movie AND read the Polar Express book. I'm sure they'll be more than fine with doing 2 things in one day.

Last night I had our RS Christmas party, which was awesome. A great dinner and the right mixture of fun and spiritual activities/thoughts. I was in charge of putting together one of the broccoli salads and I wasn't sure if I'd end up liking it because I normally don't do well with things that have a mayo base, but it was really good. I came home and found a nice clean house, too, which is always wonderful. Then, my wonderful husband, being the great man that he is, gave me a foot rub and after that he helped me put together all of my goodie bags for Activity Days so that I wouldn't have to do it by myself today. I am so blessed!

So anyway, that's what's going on at the moment. I'll be posting pretty much every day until Christmas just so that I can keep a log of our daily family activities that we're doing. Sorry if it's incredibly boring for you, but since I drop the ball every single time with a paper journal, I feel like I need to at least do something. Have a good one!

17 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!!

Gifts To Jesus, Polar Express And More

Caleb decided that his gift to Jesus is going to be to start asking for permission to do/use things. Ty's is to stop hitting and kicking. I won't post John's just in case he doesn't want everyone and their dog to know. Mine is to get better about saying my prayers every night.

Today's activity is to watch Polar Express. Caleb has watched it a couple times already this year, but don't think that Ty has. Hopefully he'll enjoy it. Then I have to assemble a broccoli salad to bring to our ward's Relief Society Christmas Dinner tonight that requires Sunday dress so I will have to do my chiropractor appointment in Sunday dress. Should be interesting.

Caleb's big accomplishment right now is that he can play Mario Party on the Wii all by himself. This may not seem that big, but it's only been about 2 months since we allowed him to start trying to play the Wii at all. It's kind of nice for us because if he earns game time (being really good in the grocery store or something like that), we don't have to sit through a whole game with him because he loves to play a star battle game by himself now. We also bought him Mouse Trap on Friday and he loves to play that with me. It's probably a good thing that he has 2 more board games coming for Christmas:)

18 Days Until Christmas!!!

Christmas Wrapping, Christmas Party, Christmas Tree

On Friday night I wrapped all of the Christmas gifts that I'm responsible for wrapping. I've never had to sit for well over an hour on the floor trying to wrap Christmas presents with a pregnancy belly. It's interesting and not very comfortable. I'm very glad that I was motivated to do it all in one sitting so that I don't have to sit down to wrap more in the next few weeks.

This past Saturday was our ward Christmas party. We made brownies for it. Caleb had a hard time with it because he was very hungry (we ate about an hour or so later than he's used to eating supper at), but he was really excited to see Santa and was fine once he got some food. Ty wasn't a big fan of Santa, apparently, but I'm sure he'll do better next year.

Last night we put up our Christmas tree. Caleb was very happy and excited. He also left out his boot by the door for Saint Nicholas. Today we'll be starting our Daily December Activities. I wasn't going to start it until next year, but I felt really prompted to do it starting now until Christmas. I really only missed the first few days, so it's all good. Today we get to think of a gift that we want to give to Jesus this upcoming year, write it down and put it in our stockings (next year we'll have a separate stocking for the Savior).

Anyway, that's about all I have to write about for now. I hope you have a great week! 19 Days Until Christmas:)

Attitude of Gratitude

Wow! It's Thursday already. So, what am I grateful for this week?

1) I'm grateful that I had a fun Super Saturday activity to go to and got to make some really fun/cute stuff there. Yummy hot chocolate, an amazing burrito bar for lunch and awesome strawberry cheesecake for dessert. It was wonderful! I love Super Saturdays so much.

2) I'm grateful that John finally got to feel Brettley kick at 5 am this morning. He was very happy and has been waiting for a few weeks to be able to feel him, but Brett was in fine form and just kicking away in there like there was no tomorrow. *Ha ha, he just kicked me now, he must know that I'm writing about him* I've been through a pregnancy where no one was really excited when the baby started kicking, so it's nice to have someone to share it with and know that it makes them happy as well.

3) I'm grateful for Elder Gardner, a missionary serving in our ward at the moment, sharing a couple of Book of Mormon verses with us last night that totally reminded me that Heavenly Father allows us to go through trials and temptations so that we become stronger in our faith and closer to Heavenly Father. They also reminded me of my favourite Doctrine and Covenants scripture, D&C 6:34:
Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail.

(If you're curious, the scriptures he read were Heleman 5:12 and Ether 2:24-25)

HELP!

I need some help from whoever is actually reading this. I'm trying to make a calendar for December for next year that will have a family activity every day (at least up until the 24th). These can be spiritually oriented, or just good clean fun. So what are some good (mostly indoor as we'll have a 9 month old) activities to do together as a family during December?

Of course one would be to put up and decorate the tree, another for us would be to watch The Forgotten Carols on DVD. I'm looking for stuff like that. So please send any and all ideas that you might have my way. Thanks:)

Super Saturday

I'm avoiding getting started on the housework. It can wait until 9 or so, I'm sure.

This past week I went to Super Saturday. I made a glass etched vase that says "Let it snow" on it, a wreath of bells for the boys' bedroom door and a painted wooden Christmas tree. It's supposed to say something on it, but I can't decide what I want to put on it yet, so it's still just a tree. I love what I made though, especially my vase. It turned out so well.

My mum stayed over that night and helped Caleb paint some stained glass looking ornaments. He was SO excited. She also bought Brett's stocking for him. The boys all have the same kind of stocking and I didn't want to wait until next year and find out that the place didn't sell them anymore or something. And they're all the same exact size, so no fighting over that:)

Other than that, I don't think too much else is really new here. I lead a boring life:P Our Christmas tree has made it upstairs but isn't set up yet because I still have to find the legs for it. I was looking for a metal stand last week only to realize that I should have been looking for plastic legs. I'll hopefully find them today. My basement is kind of a dumping ground at the moment.

Oh, and John and I made some sugar cookies last night. They're amazing, I love the recipe we use. It's Sugar Cookie Cutouts from Kraft Canada. LOVE EM! For date night last week we played Mario Party 8 on the Wii and had Yogurt Pops and Diet Sprite with Sour Apple syrup, yum:)

Anyway, I hope you have a great week!

Attitude of Gratitude

I actually taught about this talk at Activity Days last night and was reminded of just how amazing it is. It might be my favourite talk. Anyway, here's my Attitude of Gratitude:

1) I am grateful for my dad and him helping us out with an unexpected financial setback. Some gasket thing went on our van last week and we had to have it replaced which I wasn't expecting to have to do only 4 months after we bought it. My dad calmed me down and reassured me that he would help us out. My relationship with him has changed a lot in the last year or so, and I'm grateful for that, too.

2) I am grateful to have a warm home to be in when it's cold outside. I could sit here and complain about the cold forever, because I'm definately not its biggest fan, but really, I am grateful that I have ways of staying warm through the cold months (warm house, vehicle that works, good winter clothes, etc). Plus, it motivates me more to make hot chocolate for the boys and I, because all 3 of us just love it.

3) I am grateful for a husband who is willing to help out so much. He cleaned while I was at Activity Days last night and often does this. He is more often than not the one to load and run the dishwasher. He changes at least half of the dirty diapers on our kids. But the biggest one, in my opinion, is that he has done almost every single night time feeding with both of our kids. Not many husbands would be willing to do that for a wife who doesn't leave the house to work, but mine has recognized that in our house it's a need and does it without complaining. I'm so blessed. I picked well:)

Happy American Thanksgiving today and hope you have a great weekend!!!

PS
Finally got one of these taken. Sorry it's not the best, Caleb (4) had to take it for me. 22 weeks 2 days in the photo.

Day 15

PICTURES OF YOUR DREAM HOUSE

I don't actually have any pictures of what the house itself looks like, but here are the floor plans. It's the Heritage by Pacesetter. I don't have all of my colour schemes decided yet, but I would have dark wook cabinetry with light wood flooring and at least one of my rooms (probably my great room) would have an accent wall in a deep red and the other walls would be tan.

The boys' rooms would be the ones in the basement and bedroom #2 upstairs would be our spare room. The lifestyle room would be our hobby/computer room.

There are 2 reasons why this is the house I want. 1) The master ensuite's toilet has a door that closes it off from the rest of the bathroom. 2) Look at that massive storage room that includes a shelving space in the basement! Not to mention I could overflow storage in the utility room if I needed to.

So there you have it, this is the house that I dream of building. It may not be over the top, but it would be a very comfortable sized house for us. Anything more than this would just be more to clean, right?

PS
Someone asked me what bugged me about Harry Potter. Without giving away any plot, there is a short scene that borders on nudity (I would classify it as such). I find it highly inappropriate and unnecessary. It still makes me mad.

Day 14 and Update

SOME PICTURES YOU LOVE THAT YOU'VE TAKEN

I haven't taken very many pictures that I like, but I do like these two. The first is the Salt Lake Temple's reflection in the Reflecting Pool at Temple Square. The second is just one of Caleb pouring water that I really like. I think it's the action of the water and brightness of the colours that I like the most.

UPDATE
Not too much is new. I had another ultrasound last week plus my first prenatal appointment for this pregnancy. Apparently all is going well. Brettley is kicking lots now. I can feel him kick from the outside, but for some reason John can't yet.

For our date night last week we went to go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. It is so amazing how 1 short scene can ruin an entire movie for you. Less than 30 seconds of something inappropriate killed that whole movie for me, because I loved the rest of it. It was really hard on me, I'm such a Harry Potter geek.

On Saturday night I had some people over for games and snacks. It was a lot of fun and I'm so glad that I had the idea to have the party. I also made a new brownie recipe for the first time and LOVED them!

So yeah, that's pretty much all that's new in the Bly house. I can't believe tomorrow's already the last day of the 15 Day Challenge. I'm going to miss it. Have a good one!

Day 13

GOALS

-Exaltation
-To raise my boys to have strong testimonies, to have them serve missions, to know the value of hard work and perseverance
-To own our own house someday
-To go back to Utah for another visit
-To be a better housekeeper (I'm really working hard on this one at the moment, actually)
-To finish the Book of Mormon before Christmas (Doing great with this one)
-To weight 150 lbs or less by the end of 2011
-To serve in Young Women (I only have so much control over this one, though)
-To see at least 1 more girl earn her Faith in God award before I get released from my calling (Whenever that may be, I'm hoping it's at least a year away)
-To take a trip somewhere in the next 5 years with just John and I, no kids, that lasts for about a week (or more, if possible)
-To become better about saying my prayers in the morning and at night
-To finish Project 52 with a perfect record (We're good so far)
-To go to the temple more often
-To read to my boys more
-To make it through all 3 meetings in Church as much as possible over the rest of the pregnancy (This is really hard to do because of my hip/back pain, but I really want to try my hardest to stick it through)

So there you have some of my goals. Enjoy your Sabbath day:)

Day 12

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?

I believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only church in the world that teaches the fullness of the gospel and believe what the church stands for. I believe that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me and a Savior, Jesus Christ, who suffered and then rose again for me. I believe that there is a Holy Ghost who helps to guide me and comfort me. I believe that there is a prophet on the earth today, President Thomas S Monson, and that he, his counsellors and the Quorum of the 12 Apostles are prophets, seers and revelators. I believe that the priesthood keys have been restored to the earth. I believe that families can be sealed together and that marriages are meant to be eternal, not until death do you part. I believe in trying my hardest to do what's right and to try to become like Heavenly Father.

Day 11

FAVOURITE TV SHOWS

I LOVE Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. They are my top 2 favourites for sure. I also like M*A*S*H. I used to enjoy NUMB3RS, but it got too sexual so I stopped watching it.

With the kids I enjoy watching Phineas & Ferb and Avatar: The Last Airbender. They also love Caillou, but I'm not so much into that one.

Yeah, that's about it. The boys watch a variety of shows, but I don't. I'm not at all a big TV person anymore and am glad that we're cutting off our cable in the next month. It's too much of a time waster.

PS
HAPPY HARRY POTTER DAY!!!

Day 10 & Attitude of Gratitude

SOMETHING YOU'RE SCARED OF

No pictures today because I'm in a rush to get this posted, but mice, bats and birds are big ones. However, my biggest fear would be the unknown.

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

1) I am grateful for getting to hear Brettley's heartbeat twice this week and knowing that everything's going well with him. Heck, I'm just plain grateful for him, as I shouldn't have been able to have anymore kids and Heavenly Father has blessed me so much that I'm able to have him.

2) I am grateful that I get to go on a double date tomorrow night to go see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the IMAX. I've been looking forward to this movie for months and months now, and I'm so excited that it's finally here.

3) I am grateful that I have been able to keep the main floor of my house clean every day since I royally messed up my hip on Monday to get it super duper clean. It's such a nice feeling to go to bed each night knowing that I'll walk downstairs in the morning to a nice clean kitchen, dining room and living room.

Yeah, that's about it for today. It's been a busy one:)

Day 8

A PLACE YOU'VE TRAVELLED TO

The first place that we've been to as a married couple I actually don't have any pictures of on the computer and it was only for one night, but we stayed in Jasper for a night about 2 weeks after our wedding. This was our honeymoon and is one of the few things I would do differently if I could go back in time. I would definately have stayed there longer and maybe gone somewhere a little bit further from home (it was only a few hours from Grande Prairie, which is where we were living at the time).

Our other trip was to Utah this past summer (like 2 days after we found out we were expecting). I'd been trying to make the trip for 5 years at this point, so I was overjoyed that I finally got to make it. It was fun and I loved getting to see friends and to visit Temple Square. I also was on the birth parent panel at the FSA National Conference which was a good experience. I definately want to go back to Utah again in a couple of years, but maybe not with the kids next time. That part of the trip ended up being pretty stressful at night when we were staying in hotels. (Our van giving up the ghost just outside of Great Falls, MT on John's birthday may not have been the best experience ever either.)

Day 7 and Update

FAVOURITE MOVIES

Ha ha, like you expected anything other than a Harry Potter movie to be first. This is my favourite of the movies so far, but that could very well change after Friday night. We shall see.

To be perfectly honest, this one is actually my favourite movie (the extended version, though). I always get choked up when Aragorn says to the hobbits "My friends, you bow to no one".

I also love this movie, which is pretty out of character for me, but the new Batman movies have been done VERY well. I'm really looking forward to when the third one comes out. So there you have my top 3 favourite movies.

UPDATE
Hmm, what's new? Well, we have a few Christmas decorations out. Caleb still can't understand why we're not putting up our tree yet. I'm trying to wait until the first Saturday in December to put it up. We'll see how long I last. I can be worse than a kid about getting excited and getting the Christmas stuff up.

For our date night this week John and I had these pudding things and some diet pop and watched Forgotten Carols together. I love watching it:) John really likes it too.

The not so much fun part of the week was finding out that Ty has bronchitis. He was getting really sick to his stomach, so we took him in. I'm glad we didn't wait any longer and wish we'd taken him sooner. Next time I don't feel right about something, I'll follow my instinct instead of trying to reason it away.

Yesterday I got to go visiting teaching:) I love it. Anyway, this is a month where we get to choose a talk from General Conference or the Relief Societ General Broadcast to use for our message. I chose President Monson's talk from Sunday morning, 'The Divine Gift of Gratitude'. The quote that all of us seemed to love the most was
"My brothers and sisters, to express gratitude is gracious and honorable, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live with gratitude ever in our hearts is to touch heaven."

Isn't President Monson so wonderful? Anyway, hope you've had a wonderful weekend and are looking forward to a great week:)

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Day 6

A SONG THAT MAKES YOU CRY (OR NEARLY) AND WHY

The first is From God's Arms, To My Arms, To Your's (written by Michael McLean). If you've ever heard it and know anything about me, there's no explaination necessary. If you're missing one of the other, here it goes. It's a song written for a birth mother to sing to the adoptive parents that she was placing her child with. I am not that birth mother, but I am A birth mother to the most beautiful girl in the world, L.

Another is I Was Not His Father, He Was Mine (also by Michael McLean). It's from Forgotten Carols and it always makes me think about how hard it would have been to know that you're raising the Son of God and that no matter what, you would never be better than this perfect child that you're raising. I can't imagine how inadequate Christ's mother and Joseph must have felt while they were bringing him up.

Yeah, so those are my big 2 songs. There are other ones that have ocassionally made me cry such as I Stand All Amazed, How Great Thou Art, The Reason by Hoobastank and others.

Have a great Sabbath Day!

Day 5

PICTURES OF THINGS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY

Friday, November 12, 2010

Day 4

SOMETHING YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO

1) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I on the IMAX next Friday. I am WAY excited for this, in case you couldn't tell by the counter on the side of my blog, my blog background and if you have me on Facebook I've been counting down the weeks for well over a month now.

2) Christmas, definately! The whole Christmas season is just so much fun. The spirit in the air, the decorations, the baking, the reminder it gives us about the humble birth of our Savior. It's all just so amazing. Our favourite albums this year are Christmas Carroll by Carroll Baker (mine) and Phineas and Ferb Holiday Favorites (Caleb's, although I love it as well).

3) Brettley Eoin Bly. We are very much looking forward to welcoming him into home and have him here to love even more and enjoy watching him as he grows. Last night I felt him kick my hand for the first time, so John is definately looking forward to getting a boot or two now.

Day 3 and Attitude of Gratitude

YOUR SIBLINGS AND PARENTS:

My dad, Henry (Matty), lives right here in Edmonton. He was a financial clerk for many years for the military. He retired from the military early in 2006 and now works as a civilian for the military in the health services dept (I think).

My brother, Kyle, lives in Calgary. He works for Indigo and is in the process of getting ready to move into more of a management position next year. He also attends school part time where he's working towards his Bachelor of Management (I think that's what it's called) and in spring 2009 he recieved his diploma in management studies from MacEwan. Kyle has been in a long term relationship with Danielle for over 5 years now, and we really love her. She is currently in her last year of Interior Design at Mount Royal and also has a management studies diploma from MacEwan from 2008.

My mum, Jo-Ann, lives in Wainwright. She was a supply tech in the military until 2001, when she retired to move back to Wainwright (and to Bob). She had a few jobs until she settled into the job as the main admin assistant in the Health Services dept on the military base as a civilian (the military must be a black hole, ha ha). My mum can do pretty much anything that's even remotely crafty and do it very well. I wish I had that skill:) Anyway, she live with my step-dad, Bob, who is the electrical shop foreman on base.

I also have a step-sister, Kirby, who is 6 months younger than me. She also lives in Wainwright and is working at a clothing store.

JOHN'S SIBLINGS AND PARENTS (I've shortened the town/city names to give them a bit of privacy)

John's parents live in M-town. Dad was the town adminstrator before I met him, but retired. He now serves on the town council. Mom was a registered nurse before she had John and now serves in the Family History Centre and volunteers at the school a lot as well. They love to travel.

John's oldest sister, Kathy, lives in PB. She is a reporter for a newspaper and loves travelling and especially taking her nieces and nephews to Disneyland.

Next is Debi, who lives in C-town. She works nights at 7-11. She and her husband, Delin, have 4 kids.

After John is Heather, who lives here in E-town. She stays at home and juggles taking her kids to school, dance and other classes. She and Mike have 6 kids.

Last is Amy, who lives next to Mom and Dad in M-town. She also stays at home and strives her best to be a wonderful homemaker (we think she does amazingly well). She and Ryan have 4 kids.

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
1) I am SO grateful for 2 wonderful girls who both finished their Faith in God award requirements last night at Activity Days. They are amazing and have worked so hard to get these awards. C and A are the kind of girls that make me love my calling and look forward to going to our meetings. Last night was C's last meeting. A has 2 more left to go. I will miss them lots, but I know that they will have a blast in Young Women.

2) I am grateful to learn that there are things in this world that bother me more than mice. One of those things being second-hand smoke residue making my kids and I sick. It's always nice to be reminded that I have my priorities a little straighter than I thought I did.

3) I am grateful for wonderful men and women have died and risked death to give me the freedom that I enjoy today.

Hope you have a great Remembrance Day and observe the 2 minutes of silence.

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Day 2

SOMETHING THAT STRESSES YOU OUT

First and foremost, my kids. Not that they're the worst kids out there or something, because they are definately not, but just because I stress about everything, and they are the 'thing' that I deal with the most.

Along with my kids, I stress about having to a)raise them at this time in the world where morals and strength in religious beliefs are becoming a thing of the past more and more each day and b)raising them in a big city where there is more violence and more immoral people to influence them and less people closer together who share the standards I'm trying to raise my kids with.

Having my hip and back so wonky during pregnancy so that I can't do nearly as much as I could a few months ago. It's stressful to know that I should be doing things like carting laundry up and down the stairs, but I'm not able to and so I have to rely on John a LOT more.

Pretty much everything stresses me out, though. I always want things to be perfect and they seldom are, so I'm a really stressed out person. Just ask my mum or John, they'll agree in a heartbeat.

So there you have it. Tomorrow's challenge is a lot more upbeat, PLUS it's Attitude of Gratitude day then:)

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

15 Day Challenge

I've decided to take up the challenge to do the following:

Day 1 - Self portrait picture and 15 interesting facts
Day 2 - Something that stresses you out
Day 3 - Your siblings and parents
Day 4 - Something you're looking forward to
Day 5 - Pictures of things that make you happy
Day 6 - A song that makes you cry (or nearly and why)
Day 7- Favourite movies
Day 8 - A place you've travelled to
Day 9 - Put your iPod on shuffle, what are the first 10 songs
Day 10 - Something you're afraid of
Day 11 - Favourite TV shows
Day 12 - What do you believe?
Day 13 - Goals
Day 14 - Some pictures you love
Day 15 - Pictures of your dream house

So here is DAY 1 - SELF PORTRAIT AND 15 INTERESTING FACTS

This was taken last year. I don't have an SD card at the moment, so I can't do a new one.

1) I listen to 2 of my Christmas albums all year round (Christmas Eve and Other Stories by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Forgotten Carols by Michael McLean)
2) I don't have my class 5 driver's and keep wishing I could smack the next person who pesters me about it. There are now good reasons why I don't have it.
3) I have craved McDonald's cheeseburgers every single time I've been pregnant.
4) I love my calling. It stresses me out a lot, but I love it. (I'm the Activity Days leader in my ward)
5) I'm still extremely sad that I'll never have a girl of my own but do my best to put on a brave face for the world.
6) It drives me up the wall when people mess up the words when they're singing.
7) I am a recovered alcoholic of almost 7 years now.
8) I talk to my mum almost every single day unless one of us is travelling (and close to it even then).
9) I am doing our stake's challenge of getting the Book of Mormon read before Christmas. I finished Alma 54 this morning and read 3 chapters per day.
10) I'm currently rereading Fishers of Men by Gerald N Lund even though I'm supposed to be reading Persuasion by Jane Austen for our book club before next Thursday. I probably won't get it done, but I'd much rather read something that I find spiritually uplifting.
11) I'm early for everything when I'm not relying on someone other than John to get me there.
12) I tried a jellied salad for the first time ever this past weekend. It was okay, but I think it needed pomegranate seeds.
13) I haven't had visiting teachers come to see me in almost a year. I really miss it. But I enjoy getting out to do my own route because I have a great companion and awesome sisters.
14) I love Harry Potter, it might be bordering on an unhealthy obsession some days. John and I will be dressing up for Deathly Hallows Part 2 next year (I wouldn't fit into much of a costume at the moment with my big baby belly.
15) I dressed up as a jedi for Star Wars Episode III with 2 of my friends. It was awesome!!!

Happy To Be Home

What a rough few days. The boys and I spent 2 nights at my dad's. The stay itself was relatively okay but because my dad is a smoker and there is smoke residue in everything it made both of the boys and I sick. Not so much fun.

The weekend was a lot better, though. We went down to Magrath. Caleb and Ty had a blast playing with their cousins. It was nice to get down for a visit, even if it was a super quick one just to get the baby clothes. Our next visit will be for a week, so that will give us lots more visiting time.

The mouse has apparently decided to leave on it's own because we haven't seen any sign of it at all since Thursday morning. I didn't much care, I was coming back home last night whether there was a mouse or not. I'd rather be scared than get the boys and I sick again.

Last night I went through 5 garbage bags worth of baby clothes. I will be Goodwilling 1.5-2 garbage bags worth since I don't think Brett will want fuzzy super warm winter clothes in July and August.

Anyway, I'm thrilled to be back home and that I now get to buy some cute little baby shorts since we don't have any for the first 6 months. Hope you have a great week:)

Attitude of Gratitude

I'm having a hard time being grateful today, which means I probably need to do this more than usual.

1) I'm grateful to have my dad living close to us and always willing to help out when we need it. The boys and I are staying at his place while John wages war against the whole 1 mouse that decided to take up residence in our home. I don't think I've ever explained the mouse thing on the blog before. I have a very nasty irrational fear of mice. I don't call it a phobia because seeing pictures and movies doesn't bother me (unless it's an infestation or something), but if there's a mouse in my house, I hightail it elsewhere. The few hours I had to spend in my house with the mouse yesterday were full of being paranoid and super nauseous.

2) I'm grateful that I'll be able to go to Magrath tomorrow for a couple of nights. I miss our family down there so much. I wish it could be a longer visit, but it's just a quick one to pick up all of the baby clothes that we have stored in my in-law's garage attic. (On a side note, I have the best father-in-law that there is. He is amazing and I'm always really grateful for him.)

3) I'm grateful for the strength that Heavenly Father gives me to get through times that I'm sure I wouldn't be able to get through on my own. I have been so blessed since making the choice to follow the Lord, and I am so thankful that I was introduced to this wonderful better way of living life. I've lived without the gospel and with it, and I can honestly say that a life without the gospel is definately not a life worth living once you've tasted both.

Hope you all have a great weekend and keep your fingers crossed for us that our little rodent friend meets his death very soon.

I'm Cool With It

I found out that a lot of people aren't sure of what to say to me about having another boy because they don't know how I feel about it. So here's the honest truth:

Yes, it hurts. After I found out I spent a few minutes in the bathroom right next to the u/s room bawling my eyes out. The little girl that I've been waiting on for over 6 years now will never come to me in this life (barring some huge miracle), because we are officially done after this. But then I remembered that this is about more than just me. I think I've mentioned this before that my husband has OCD. His doesn't manifest itself so much in the strict routines and organization, it's the obsessive thoughts that most people can shake out of their head that he can't, which in my opinion is a heck of a lot worse than the routines and stuff. When you combine this with trying to live a clean Christlike life it is VERY HARD. I don't envy John and I wish every day that I could take it away. That being said, I think that it's going to be a lot easier for John to never have a girl in this life. And if that's one of the things that I have to suck up and deal with to support him, then I'll do it with a smile on my face. I love him and he comes first before what I want.

So now I'm excited about having another boy. I don't have to buy as many clothes, just change up some seasonal stuff for the first couple of years. (However, I've still been buying some stuff because it's super cute and it's on clearance) I don't have to worry about how a girl would survive the 2 crazy boys that we already have. Finally, and here's the big sigh of relief, I will never have to deal with my daughter as she experiences psycho teenage girl hormones. I will just get 3 (hopefully) daughters-in-law who are already past that stage. I'm good with that. So yes, I am happily accepting congratulations. As long as no one tries to throw it in my face and laugh at me for not having a girl, I'm totally good.

We took a few days, but finally decided on a name for our new little man. After many near arguements, we chose Brettley Eoin Bly. Eoin is pronounced O-in and is the Irish form of John. Make fun of the name Brettley all you want, but I absolutely love it.

On Saturday we went to our ward's Halloween party in the morning. Caleb was Larry the Cucumber from Veggie Tales and Ty was a knight. They had lots of fun. They got some candy, played a couple of games and decorated some sugar cookies (which were amazing and I could definately tell they were the recipe that I use now that has cream cheese in it). That night John and I had our weekly date night. We had taco chips with sour cream and salsa and we organized Magic cards for our activity (his idea). Sound pretty boring, right? I LOVED it. I'm all about sorting things into categories and alphabetical order so I was entirely in my element. In fact, we kept on going last night because I'd enjoyed getting to do that and just having time to sit together and talk. So far we've done a date night every week since we committed to Project 52.

Not too much else is new right now, though. My boys just both have a nasty cough now and John has started doing lots of overtime. We're looking forward to spending a few nights in Magrath this weekend as we go to pick up the baby clothes we have stored there in my in-law's garage attic. Hope you have a great week:)

U/S and Attitude of Gratitude

First off, the ultrasound went okay. I have to go back for another in a few weeks because the tech couldn't get a good enough picture of the spine because of how the baby was laying. However, we DID find out that we will have a house full of testosterone. That's right, Baby Boy Bly #3 is officially due on April 1st, 2011, but I'm sticking with March 30th because I know I'm not going to make it to my due date anyway. I'm sure it will be a rowdy house as they grow up, but it will definately be interesting.

So, on with Thursday's Attitude of Gratitude.

1) I am grateful that our little platypus let us know his gender. I'm also grateful for cute clothes on clearance from Please Mum and Old Navy. I love baby clothes, they are so much fun!

2) I am grateful that my dad watched my boys for me yesterday even though he had a sore back. I'd had a babysitter from our ward lined up, but wouldn't you know it that my boys would decide the night before that they both needed to have croup, so I couldn't very well stick them in a house for the afternoon with someone else's baby. My dad has been so good to us, I'm really blessed.

3) I am grateful for my wonderful girls in Activity Days, especially the ones who are working so hard on achieving their Faith in God awards. They make my calling really enjoyable and I love getting to spend time with them.

Well, that's about all for now. I hope you have a great Halloween weekend.

Ty is 2, Caleb is Nervous/Shy and I'm Anxious To The Point of Nausea

Ty's birthday went well. He really enjoyed his presents and Thomas cake, especially everyone singing 'Happy Birthday' to him. I spent a lot of the day super deep cleaning the kitchen. I've been paying dearly for it ever since with severe hip and back pain. My days of tough physical household chores are officially done until April, at least.

Caleb's Primary Presentation was...interesting. He did NOT want to stay up front with the other kids. Finally we told him that it was his last chance and that if he stayed up there that he could have a treat when we got home. He decided to stay up there on his teacher's lap. Then I taught John's youth Sunday School class. Shortly after that we headed home because sitting, standing and walking were all not working for my hip/back pain. I'm just glad that I was able to watch all of the presentation and that my dad came to support Caleb.

Not much else is new, I guess. I'm insanely nervous about hopefully finding out Perry's gender on Wednesday (I guess that's tomorrow now). Something about the boy name that we have picked isn't sitting right with me at all. I'm not taking it as a sign, we didn't pick Ty's name until after we found out we were having a boy. I will be so happy when we finally know what we're dealing with and we can move forward. I'm not one for surprises.

At any rate, I'll post again on Thursday with my Attitude of Gratitude and comments about how the ultrasound turns out. Until then, have a good one.

Attitude of Gratitude

Sorry it's late, yesterday was a bit of a rough day with a sore back and some semi-bad news about some family.

I am grateful for my dad being willing to take the boys last night and feed them supper at his place so that John and I could go to dinner and a movie after a rough day. We went to Earl's where the food was great and the service was EXCELLENT!!! Then we saw The Sorcerer's Apprentice which was really good.

I am grateful that Caleb is being self-sufficient enough to make himself sandwiches on the days that I'm not at my best. My little boy is growing up to be a great person and I've very proud of him. His first Primary Presentation will be on Sunday and I'm very much looking forward to watching him in that.

I am grateful for wonderful men who honourably hold and respect the priesthood and are willing to help give blessings at the drop of a hat. I think back to what life was like before I joined the church and there's just no comparing the two. They are just too different. I'm so grateful that I was introduced to the gospel and saw right away just how right it is. I love how respectful honourable priesthood holders are and how trustworthy they are. They are so different from men of the world, and I'm so grateful that I married such a wonderful man.

*****

Also, my baby boy is turning 2 tomorrow. Little Ty is definately in his terrible 2s. He is stubborn to the core and such a handful. He loves to sing and to be sang to and just loves music in general. He has the biggest, cutest smiles and is so polite. He loves to say hi to everyone that he sees. Ty loves his Papa M and being able to run around outside. He has recently fallen in love with going down the slides at parks. He is such a wonderful kid and we can't imagine our lives without him, even though we thought he was a girl for most of the pregnancy. Ty enjoys sharing a room with Caleb and loves Caillou and trains. Happy Birthday, Nugget. We love you so much!

Less than 5 weeks until HP!!!

It's been a busy but not terribly interesting week. We had Activity Days on Wednesday where we made an FHE pack about the Word of Wisdom. John and I were supposed to go to the temple on Thursday, but we both had upset stomachs and weren't able to go. I was pretty sad, I love the temple. On Friday Caleb helped me to clean his and Ty's room, the baby's room and the upstairs hallway really well. I felt a great sense of accomplishment.

On Saturday I ordered Ty's birthday cake. They didn't have a Caillou one, so I had to get Thomas instead, but Ty also really likes trains, so it'll be okay. It's marble with chocolate frosting filling. I can't believe he'll be 2 this Saturday.

Not too much else is really new. Just plugging away. Our next few weekends are busy. This weekend is Ty's birthday and Caleb's first Primary Presentation. The next weekend is Halloween (although I still haven't heard anything about a ward activity). The first weekend in November we're making a super quick trip to Magrath to pick up all of our baby clothes that are stored in the attic of my in-law's garage.

I had a great reminder in church yesterday. As much as I would love to have a baby girl I was reminded by the little boy on the bench in front of us that even baby boys still do all the cute little baby things. I can't believe the poll for the baby's gender has got 12 votes on it. I was expecting about 5. So now I'm curious as to who voted, as I only know of 3 people for sure who did. Have a great week:)

Thoughts and Admissions

I kind of stole this off of C's blog, but I need a pick-me-up at the moment because it's been a long day with cleaning and what not, so here goes:

1) What is your favourite day of the week and why?
It's probably Saturday because John is home from work and gets to spend the day with us. It's more relaxed than Sunday where I spend the majority of Sacrament Meeting fighting with my kids to behave in a remotely acceptable manner.

2) Recount an embarrassing moment.
When Caleb was about 2 or maybe not quite 2 we were in the checkout line at Safeway. He started pushing on my chest and yelling "SQUISHY". I was pretty mortified.

3) What was your favourite toy or game as a child?
I really liked Tinker Toys and I did go through a Barbie phase where I loved to come up with different outfits.

4) What does your name mean?
It's the female version of Nicholas and it means 'Victory of the People'. It's Greek.
For good measure, I'll do the other family names too.
John is Hebrew and means 'God is Gracious'.
Caleb is Hebrew and means 'Rage Like a Dog'.
Tyrell is English and means 'Stubborn'.

5) If you could have any occupation (and you had no limitations of obtaining that occupation), what would it be?
To be honest I don't have a desire to work outside of the home. Maybe a professional traveller, ha ha. Actually, I would love to teach full-time for CES.

6) What is your guilty pleasure?
Harry Potter Fan Fiction

7) If you could change anything about your appearance what would it be?
It used to be my chin, but now it's probably more the size of my tummy (pre-Perry) and the size of my chest. I'd like both to be a bit smaller.

8) If you could raise awareness about one topic (education, poverty, AIDS, etc) what would it be?
This is a tough one for me. I think as much as I love adoption and how wonderful it is, I'm going to have to pick mental illness. I mean to not just get people to admit that it exists, but to TRULY understand what it is and how it affects people. Because let's be honest here, if you don't live with it then you don't truly get it. In our house we understand a lot about OCD and Bipolar because that's what we live with, but there are so many people (us included) who don't understand why people do the things they do when they're living with mental illness and because we in the Bly house live with it we do understand how frustrating it can be when people just don't get it. (Just to be clear, I'm not at all intending to pick on anyone. It's just a topic I'm passionate about, especially after this last year.)
Of course, it would be best if more people understood what the Gospel is and what it can do for them. So can I at least pick 2? The Gospel and Mental Illness

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. I'm going to order Ty's birthday cake tomorrow. Hopefully they'll have a Caillou one, that's his obsession at the moment.

Attitude of Gratitude

It's Thursday again. Having a holiday on a Monday really threw me this week. At any rate, here are the 3 things I'm grateful for this week:

1) Having a temple in the same city as me. John and I are going tonight and I'm so excited. I love that the temple is close enough that if I'm having a really rotten day we can just pick up and go to the temple to that I can sit on the steps there and feel the peace that comes every single time I'm on temple grounds. Plus, I love that it's close enough that Caleb can enjoy seeing the temple as well.

2) When my Activity Days girls get excited about working toward their Faith in God award. Some of my girls were like machines last night passing off their Articles of Faith. It was GREAT! I am so excited to see them working on this inspired program and love that I get to help them with it.

3) I'm also grateful that John made an executive decision for our family that after this Christmas we will be spending the rest of them at home. If anyone wants to come to our place they're more than welcome too, but we won't be travelling for Christmas anymore after this one. We don't enjoy travelling with our kids since we work even harder to keep them out of things away from home than we do here, so it's not an enjoyable holiday at all for us. John knew that I'm kind of at the end of my rope with travelling and knew that I couldn't make the decision because it was too hard on me to do it, so he did it for me. I love my husband:)

I'm grateful for lots more, but I really want to stick to 3 per week.

I'll also be putting up a poll on the side. We'll be having an ultrasound in 2 weeks (the 27th) and we're hoping to find out the gender of the baby. So make your guess, please:)

In going through old posts, I realized that I never said how Caleb's eye exam turned out. He's red-green colour deficient. We won't know to what extent until he's older, but it is there. We pretty much knew it already, but it was nice to have a professional tell us that we weren't imagining things. John's prescription stayed the same but he got new glasses anyway so that he now has an everyday pair and a backup pair.

Thanksgiving

I have started seeing the chiropractor again. It's costly, but it keeps me mobile so I'll take it. On Thursday I went visiting teaching and got to give a message about how temples bless us. It was great. I love the temple. John and I are going on Thursday and I'm very excited about it. I also love visiting teaching. My companion is wonderful and so are the ladies that we get to go and visit. Visiting teaching is definately inspired.

John worked a half day on Friday and then we headed to Wainmo. That night John took me out to dinner at BPs for date night. We spent Saturday in North Battleford at my grandparents' place. We were supposed to come home on Monday morning, but decided to come home after our Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday night instead. All 4 of us were ready to be back to our own beds and our own routine. Apparently we don't travel well with the kids.

Not too much else is really new in my life, though. It's pretty boring. Caleb has been doing loads better with his behaviour. If he's good all day, he gets a small Halloween treat at the end of the day. Maybe some people think that's bribery, but if it stops him from extremely destructive and disgusting behaviour, I'm cool with it.

Hope you have a great week.

Attitude of Gratitude

So I just wrote up my entire post and posted it and then realized I'd accidentally put it on the baby's blog.

At any rate, after being encouraged during General Conference this past weekend to develop an attitude of gratitude, I have decided to adopt Thankful Thursday. Each Thursday I'll post three things that I'm particularly grateful for that week, besides the obvious answers each week.

I'm grateful for a husband who is so willing to give. A few days ago my oldest SIL invited me to join her, her sisters and her mom for Time Out For Women in Calgary next year. I went to TOFW last year when it was here in Edmonton and I loved it. However, the Calgary TOFW is the first weekend in May. The baby will only be 1.5 to 2 months old at that point. Most husbands wouldn't be thrilled about taking care of all 3 kids by himself while his wife goes away overnight for an unnecessary trip, especially with the youngest being that young. But mine was wonderful. He thought it would be a great idea for me to go and had no hesitation in saying he'd be fine taking care of the kids by himself. I am very much looking forward to spending time with his family that weekend and coming home being even more spiritually uplifted.

I'm grateful to finally have scheaduled a prenatal appointment and a diagnostic ultrasound appointment as well. It was a huge fiasco to get my GP's rear in gear (and his receptionist near the end) that took over 5 weeks. However, the OB/GYN's receptionist was great and made sure during our phone call that everything would be taken care of and that I wouldn't miss any windows for testing. We're looking forward to seeing our little Perry for the first time on the 27th. Perry is the name we're calling the baby until we know the gender.

I'm grateful to have been enjoying such beautiful autumn weather. It almost makes up for the summer that we didn't have up here in E-town.

So, what are you grateful for?

Caleb's Turnaround

Caleb had his turnaround this week. After a few weeks of tears and screaming (on pretty much everyone's part), it finally happened.

The first part of the week was really bad. I'll give you one day's example. On Wednesday, I had to go upstairs long enough to find out the location and hours of the dump due to the boys's previous day's activities. In the whopping 10 minutes that took me, the boys dumped a litre of canola oil and two full tins of baby formula on the floor and a kitchen chair and started smearing it all around. Needless to say, I was far less than impressed. If you've ever bought formula, you know that each can costs about $25, and they destroyed TWO!

We had actually ended up doing our date night on Tuesday after a particularly frustrating day. We went out for dinner and dessert. We went to the Swiss Chalet, and the service was very slow. Plus, the waitress gave me a Clamato juice when I'd specifically asked for tomato juice, which is frustrating as I don't like Clamato at all. The ribs in our meal were pretty good, though, and I loved my cheesecake. Now it's my month off and John's turn to plan dates for October. It should be interesting to see what he plans for us.

So on Wednesday, I finally got through to Caleb while he was cleaning up the formula (the bag of chips I bribed him with if he was good for a whole day may have helped). The only bad thing he's done since then was throwing a raging hissy fit last night, but he was tired from staying up hours past bedtime the night before. It's been wonderful to have my not-quite-so destructive Caleb back. We're getting along great now. He helps me when I need his help and is so happy to hear that he's being a good boy and making Mommy so happy. He keeps telling me that I'm beautiful (guess it's a good thing he's having an eye exam tonight, ha ha) and that he loves me. I love it and I love him, too.

As this weekend was General Conference, we spent a lot of the weekend in front of the TV watching it. Caleb woke up at 8:30 on Saturday and was crushed that it wasn't time to see the prophet on TV yet. It made me feel great and like I'm doing at least 1 thing right. Caleb lets it show how much he loves the prophet, temples, church/Sunbeams, saying prayers and Jesus. I love that he loves them.

Tomorrow is my birthday. I'll officially enter my late twenties. I had a brilliant plan for my birthday and Christmas this year. Normally I ask my parents to buy me things for the house. This year I was going to do something for me. I was going to ask for gift cards for HMV so I could save them up and get something I've been wanting for quite a while. My parents, however, ended up giving me enough in gift cards just for my birthday that I was able to get it without having to wait for Christmas. I was able to get the entire Stargate SG-1 series PLUS another season of Stargate Atlantis. I was VERY happy. My actual birthday will be nothing special as I'll be spending the night at a Birth Parent Support meeting, but I guess that's what happens as you get older.

So in the end I did have a good week and was able to remember just how special Caleb really is to me.

Caleb is 4

Caleb and I had another not-so-fun week. I'm not really sure what to do with him.

On Saturday he turned 4. It's so hard to believe that he's that old already. He had a birthday party with a couple of his cousins. He was very happy with his presents and had a great time. After the party we went to Walmart where he got to spend his gift card from Grandpa M. He was so excited to get to pick his own toys and to give his gift card to the cashier all by himself.

That evening John and I had our date night for the week. We watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Since this coming weekend is General Conference, we've decided to do the date on Wednesday. I'm not sure what to do. One of the rules is that you can't do the same thing twice in a month. So far we've eaten a 'special' meal together, played a board game and watched a movie. I guess I'll have to look through the Project 52 blog to get some ideas.

Found out this morning that we're just waiting to hear back on a date from to OB for my first prenatal appointment. That means I'm not mad at my doctor anymore, which feels nice.

The exciting news for the week is that I felt the baby move a couple of different times. That was fun:) Oh, and I officially moved into mat clothes.

Not too much else is new right now though. I hope you all have a wonderful week:)

Cleaning, Caleb and Visiting Teaching

I'm not going to go into details, but Caleb and I had a week where I felt like he'd be lucky to survive until his 4th birthday, which happens to be only 5 days away. It was long and stressful, but I'm glad it's over and we can work on moving forward.

For last week's date night, we got some Chinese food and had a nice dinner with just the 2 of us. Then John gave me a foot rub. It was nice, relaxed and much needed.

We finally got our room nice and clean (just one bookshelf, the computer desk drawers and the closet left to go through and organize. My mum and her husband had bought new bedroom furniture a few months ago, so they gave us their old stuff. We moved that in on Saturday. I love having a bigger dresser. I managed to really downsize my junk drawer, so I'm very happy about that. Now I just have to work on getting everything else nice and organized.

Caleb went to West Ed on Saturday with my mum and her husband. He went to Build-A-Bear and made a wolf named Wileey. He insisted that Wileey needed 2 e's. He also got chicken and fries for lunch, which he was over the moon about AND he got to go on a pirate ship. I've never got to go on the ship in West Ed, so I must admit that I was a tiny bit jealous. But he had a great day and I'm glad. We managed to get the last of his birthday presents plus some other things that we needed for around the house.

Yesterday I got to go visiting teaching for the first time since last December (I think). It was great, I loved it. The message for this month really hit home for me, about our responsibility to nurture the rising generation. This is always a big worry for me, about whether or not I'm doing enough to prepare my kids to live in this kind of a world. It's way scary out there. So here is the part of the message that I want to share:
"We must speak respectfully of marriage and family. And from our example, the rising generation can gain great hope and understanding - not just from the words we speak but from the way we feel and emanate the spirit of the family. "

I hope you have a great week:)

Butter, Larry the Cucumber and Project 52

I see I'm back to just writing for my own benefit. That's okay, though. It's still always nice to know what's happened when I look back.

Well, the most interesting thing that happened last week was the butter incident. Caleb took an entire brick of butter out of the fridge and during the 10 minutes that I was taking a time out from him because we'd been screaming at each other he decided to take chunks of butter, get them a bit squishy and throw them all over my living room ceiling, wall and floor, not to mention smear it all over Ty. I was not a happy mommy.

We did, however, get our new credit cards. That meant that I was finally able to order Caleb's Halloween costume. I'm really excited about it. He picked it out himself.

The other exciting thing is that we decided to do Project 52. For our first date night we played Lord of the Rings Monopoly, which John had bought for me as an early birthday present. I beat John by such a long shot, it was actually rather sad. He made one 'bad for him' trade early on, and it cost him the whole game.

Anyway, that's all for now, I think. I hope everyone's doing well and if you have a second to comment, I'd love it:)

Goings On

So here's what's new at the Bly home.

We think we've figured out the colour schemes for the nursery. The gender will determine what one of the accent colours is. I've started cleaning it out. It's all organized, everything just needs to go where it belongs now and it needs a good vacuuming once everything is out of there. I also cleaned the boys' closet this morning.

My brother and his girlfriend came to visit on Friday and Saturday. We loved having them here. I missed them a lot and miss them again already. They are lots of fun and the boys just love them. My brother took a couple of family photos for us, but Ty REALLY didn't want anything to do with it, so most of them didn't work out too well because of that.

We went to IKEA yesterday. I love IKEA:) We bought some hampers, some yummy smelling candles, a recycling system for our pop cans and a few other miscellaneous items. It was lots of fun.

Not too much else is new. I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend.

PS
John and I got engaged 5 years ago yesterday.

I Want Your Thoughts

Just because I'm curious as to what other people like, I want to know. What things did you most appreciate having during your pregnancy and/or your baby's first year? Also, what haven't you had during pregnancy and/or baby's first year that you wish you did? Please share.

During pregnancy I appreciate...Hmm...Diclectin, ha ha. Okay, I appreciate having lots of maternity t-shirts and nice fitting maternity jeans. I don't have a housekeeper during pregnancy or friends that come over and visit, and I would really love to have both of those (although I'm living without the housekeeper).

During the first year I appreciate a side to side baby swing. I wish I had a Bumbo (I still wish I'd bought one of the ones I saw in Utah for $30) and a bassinette of my own for in the living room for the first couple of months. I borrowed my SIL's bassinnette for both of the boys and it just didn't feel right because it wasn't mine. I know it sounds weird, but I'm a weird kind of gal.

Braver, Stronger, Smarter

I have a necklace that says Braver Stronger Smarter on it. I got it from my first ever Young Women camp this summer (the whole day and a half that I was there for). That was the theme for the camp this year, and it has really stuck with me. It's from Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robin said it. He said "You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." I love it. I'm thinking about having it put in vinyl on the baby's wall. Or maybe for the boys. I'm not sure yet. But I love it.

PS
Caleb was practicing his songs for the primary presentation and said "I know who I am, I know dog's plan". I laughed so hard.

Caleb's First Primary Talk

We got our new van. It works well and has an anchor on every seat except the driver's seat, so that's pretty cool.

Not a lot else is really new, though. I'm pretty sick right now, so I can't do much. We're just pluggin along.

Oh, and Caleb gave his first talk in primary this past Sunday. It was on "Jesus Christ Has Power Over Death". He did very well and wasn't shy about talking into the microphone at all. I was very proud of him. And then later that day he and 2 other classmates got kicked out of Sunbeams for fighting with each other.

Things That Are Going On

I don't have much to report, but I try to make an effort and post a least once per week, since this sort of doubles as my journal at the moment.

John's dad found us a new van and we'll be getting it on Saturday. It's a 2001 Ford Windstar. Apparently it's in really great condition and we got a really great deal on it.

Not too much else is new, I'm just trying to keep the nausea at bay. I don't mean to sound insensitive, and I'm sorry if it does, but I really don't enjoy this part of being pregnant and I will be very glad when it's over this time because then it will be over for good. I think it wouldn't bother me quite so much if it wasn't affecting the fact that I can't get in the vitamins that I need. But I decided today that it's better to be super nauseous than to go crazy again.

Caleb will be giving his first talk in Primary this coming Sunday, which I'm very excited about. Sunday is also L's 6th birthday, so on Monday we're going to have a cake to celebrate her and all of the wonderful change that she brought about in my life.

Oh, and my other good news is that we fixed the broken drive in the DELL and hooked it up again tonight, so I now have a working computer again. And Vista. I've missed Vista a lot in the past few months.

Well, I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend:)

Rest of the Vacation

Young Women's camp was lots of fun, even though my arms and face got a bit crispy. It rained a lot that night, but I find rain relaxing and I love it, so it was all good.

On Thursday morning, we were very sad to leave Nate, Heidi and Addie's place. Caleb was especially sad, I think he really enjoyed having Addie to play with. We met up with my friend, Erin, who I'd never actually met in person before. We went to the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy, UT. Caleb really enjoyed it. I think his favourite things were the jelleyfish, even though they had penguins. Ty seemed to really like the penguins, though. We bought them each a stuffed animal from there. Caleb wanted a shark, which we named Bruce, and Ty fell in love with a penguin, which John named Pengu. Then we went for lunch in Bountiful and I got to see the beautiful temple there. We also played at Erin's house for a bit.

Oh, and I bought the best diaper pail EVER that day. It's called a Diaper Champ. My add-ons are disabled and we can't figure out how to enable them again, or I would have added the link directly, but here is the address: http://www.babytrend.com/diaper_champ/DC50500.html

I went to a few classes on the first day of the FSA conference, and they were really good. We also went to the awards banquet (which had super yummy food including brie and herb stuffed filet mignon) and I went the the birth families mingle, which was cool because I got to meet other birth parents. I'm kind of sheltered up here in Edmonton without a group up here. I also got to meet Jill from The Happiest Sad and let her know that I read and enjoy her blog. So if you're reading this, "Hi Jill!" The next day I just showed up for the panel, since I was so nervous about it. I told a VERY brief overview of my story and then we answered some questions. Once it got started, I lost my nerves and the only hard part for me was suppressing a coughing fit while I was so close to microphones. We left right after the panel was done, because that was when my tears really hit me. I'm sure pregnancy hormones weren't helping very much, either.

That night we drove up to Pocatello and stayed in the grossest Ramada ever. We definately would have gone somewhere else if the hotel room hadn't been prepaid. It was not fun. We were up again early and went and met John's dad in Great Falls, returned the rental van and headed the rest of the way up to Magrath. Yesterday, we made the rest of the trip back home (in John's parents' van and without Caleb as he's staying down there for the week).

Anyways, I'd better publish this before my computer dies on me again. Hope you have a wonderful week:)
