Diagnosis!

So after I blogged on Thursday, I had a chance to talk to Caleb's psychologist on the phone. This was probably the best conversation she and I have ever had (I'm normally anything BUT a fan of her). It was a good conversation because I felt like she was actually listening to me for once, but also because she finally told me what diagnosis the psychiatrist has given Caleb. As I've mentioned before, I've spent over a year now knowing that something was wrong and have been working hard trying to get Caleb the help that he needs. I have sacrificed taking care of my own mind this past year in order to take care of him. Finally getting an official diagnosis was a HUGE deal! So here it is:

Caleb has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder with a tendency toward Oppositional Defiant Disorder as well. When his medication was changed a couple of weeks ago, it was changed to a non-stimulant ADHD medication meant for kids. He seems to be doing well with it so far.

Now that we know what we are working with, we are figuring out how to proceed. I am becoming WELL educated in ADHD and working on becoming very educated about ODD as well and sharing what I learn with John. We are happy keeping our current concessions for Caleb in the classroom, but finding a few others we want to add in as well. We still have a long road ahead of us, Caleb especially, but we finally feel like we've at least found the right path, and that is a huge relief.

We understand that we will have lots of people belittle Caleb's diagnosis and try to convince us that ADHD doesn't really exist and/or that we shouldn't be medicating him for it. To them I bluntly say: "You live in the past year of my life in my place and go through everything I went through as we waited for this answer and THEN say that to my face". We feel peace with this answer, and we know that it is Heavenly Father telling us that it's right and we are SO grateful for His help and guidance in all of this.

Thankful Thursday and 30 Things

1) I am grateful for my amazing friend, AJ. She has been there to listen to me a lot, especially this past year. She helps me escape when I need a few hours away from the house. Of all of the amazing blessings I've been given while serving in YW callings, she's my favourite!

2) I am grateful for everything I've gained and learned in the past decade. When I turned 20, I had just joined the church a few months ago, had place L a month and a half before and had no clue where my life was going to take me next. Over these 10 years I married a wonderful man in the temple, we had 3 wonderful boys together, we learned just how much we're able to get through with each other and the help of our Heavenly Father. It truly has been a very amazing decade for me and I'm looking forward to seeing what my 30's bring.

3) I am grateful to officially have all of the winter gear shopping for the year done. I bought Brett's lighter mitts and Caleb's second pair of warm mitts this morning and I am now done and ready for the next round of snow (which can wait until after Caleb's baptism, pretty please). It's a big relief knowing there won't be a big rush for all of that stuff for us in a few weeks!

So since I'm turning 30 on Sunday, I decided to post 30 random facts about myself for it. I won't do it that day since I'll be busy watching General Conference and enjoying my bacon breakfast, so I'll just do it now.

1) I have more noticeable OCDisms than John, and he is officially diagnosed with it.

2) I love to randomly start dancing to music, even if it's just the tune stuck in my head.

3) I spent most of my weekends in grade 12 hanging out at home with my brother and have no regrets about it.

4) In my (almost) 30 years, I still haven't found a fashion style to stick with that works for me.

5) I have never had a broken bone.

6) If I was deep cleaning my room and rearranging it as a teen, it was best to stay away. It meant I was probably upset about something.

7) I read The Book of Mormon in a month earlier this year. I have no plans to do it that quickly again.

8) I have read the entire standard works cover to cover, and would love to do that one again.

9) I craved McDonald's cheeseburgers during my pregnancies with all 3 boys.

10) I can't stand typos. If they're mine, I need to correct them as soon as I notice them. If they were made by other people, it annoys me a lot more than it should.

11) I absolutely adore the baked ravioli that John makes for me. Seriously, someone should write a song about that stuff.

12) I have a huge fear of talking on the phone to people I don't know really well. I will avoid it at almost any cost.

13) One of my favourite gifts I've ever received was a handmade knit Ravenclaw scarf from my friend. She made it for me during transit rides and breaks at work.

14) My favourite book, contrary to what people think, is actually To Kill a Mockingbird.

15) My favourite thing to get in my stocking each year is notepads. I love making lists!

16) I LOVE bacon, but I make John cook it for me because I got several grease burns when I worked at KFC and they hurt really bad.

17) I have a slight obsession with Scentsy. Okay, more than slight.

18) I have really bad insomnia. It's a big deal if I manage to fall asleep without taking a pill to help with it or spending over an hour trying to fall asleep.

19) I have spring, summer and fall allergies that get worse each year. However, I finally found a medication rotation this year that works for me.

20) I love wearing fuzzy socks on cold days. I don't wear them out of the house very often, but they are amazing for around the house.

21) I sweep my floors in they same systematic way every single time I sweep them (remember number 1?).

22) My principal in my first elementary school wanted me to skip grade 2. Had my mum agreed to it, I would have still been 16 when I graduated from high school.

23) One year, I had 3 different Halloween costumes. One for school, one for Sparks and one for Halloween night.

24) When my brother and I were young, we got to help build our log cabin fort at our grandparents' farm. We loved that thing so much!

25) I actually get super excited each time Brettley outgrows a clothing size and I get to donate them instead of putting them into storage again. It feels like progress for some reason.

26) One of my most favourite days of the year is the day that I get my new calendar in the mail. I'm a sad, strange individual like that...

27) I seldom get sad when my kids move on from parts of their childhood, but I will admit to almost shedding a tear when Caleb decided he no longer wanted to hold my hand in front of his friend at the park.

28) My favourite place to eat is at Firestone in Lethbridge. I've only been there twice, but both experiences were absolutely amazing. John even said that they have ruined him for all other baked potatoes. I heartily agree!

29) I have been doing my own laundry since I was 7. It started because I got tired of picking Kleenix bits off of my clean clothes that had been in other people's pockets, so I begged my mum to teach me how to wash my own clothes.

30) I absolutely love sour gummy candies, particularly Sour Patch Kids. Yum!

Thankful Thursday

1) I am so grateful for my beautiful blue eyed boy who turned 8 today. He was loved long before he came to us. He has been such a huge source of strength to me and taught me so much about my abilities as a mother. I love that boy so very much.

2) I am grateful for the relationship I've been able to build with my dad the past few years. We spent an hour and a half just visiting yesterday and it meant the world to me. Plus, he gave me bacon :D

3) I am grateful for my new iHome that Mum bought me as an early birthday present. She said it was important I have it because music is one of the biggest helps in keeping me sane and that after the past year, I deserve that. I love it already and it is great!

I Forgot Already

I forgot Thankful Thursday already, ack! In my defense, we had a lot going on this week and my mind was needed elsewhere. Here it is though, better late than never.

1) I am grateful for Caleb's psychiatrist who seems to genuinely care about him and was willing to change his meds, especially to a med with less side effects and none of the risks that the old ones had. It's so helpful to have support as we face this as a family and I'm so grateful to all of those who support us in any way.

2) I am grateful that many months ago my mum gave me permission to do the temple work for my grandma. Today is 1 year since Grandma passed away and it was an honor being able to print out her ordinance requests this morning to take to the temple this week to have the card printed. Next week I will have the opportunity to have her baptism and confirmation done and I am beyond grateful that I have the opportunity to do this.

3) I am grateful that Brettley loves 'Mommy School' preschool so much. He gets so excited to see what things he gets to do each day. He knows a lot more about numbers, colours and shapes than I'd originally thought and I think he'll pick up on the stuff he doesn't already know more easily than I'd anticipated. I'm enjoying so much one on one time with him this year. Hard to believe that 2 years from now he'll be in Kindergarten and I'll have to start figuring out what to do with my time.

Thankful Thursday

In an effort to post more regularly on my blog and also to help with trials I'm currently facing, I've decided it's time to resurrect Thankful Thursday. Each Thursday I will post about 3 things that I'm thankful for.

1) I am incredibly thankful for both of my parents. My mum who helps me work through things when I'm feeling stuck and like I'm at my limit. Who is able to see solutions that I can't see in the moment, and even recognize what the stress is when I myself I don't know it. Who is working so hard to help with Caleb's baptism and to make the day a success when she herself is not a member of our church and doesn't fully understand why it is so important to us. She constantly amazes me. And my dad, who is always willing to help me at the drop of a hat and never asks for anything in return. Who helps where he can, but constantly recognizes that John and I are able to make our own decisions for our family and fully respects that. I am truly blessed to be the daughter of these 2 amazing people.

2) I am thankful for the Mia Maids in our ward. Oh, how much I love these girls, who I have had the privilege of serving over and over again. Who are constantly inspiring me, amazing me and helping to bring joy to my life. One of whom who has decided to come and do cleaning in my home that I can no longer do for myself, even before I suggested that she make it her Good Works value project. I don't think I could ever love a group of girls more than this group, and I am so thankful to yet again be serving them at this point in time.

3) I am thankful that I got my motivation back for working on round 3 of Personal Progress. The program always brings me so much happiness and strength. It gives me more of a sense of purpose. There aren't enough words to express how much I love Personal Progress.

School is In

Well, the kids are officially back to school. We opted for them to come home for lunches this year to save us the $300 lunch fee to be allowed to eat at the school. They will still do breakfast club when it starts up on 15 September, though. They enjoy the break in the middle of the day and Brettley likes getting to play at the playground when we walk them back.

Ty got the most patient teacher I've ever seen and I'm really excited to see how well he'll do with her. He loves school and has been working on his sight words at home so he's finally on his way to learning to read. He loves getting to high five his words when he reads them correctly on his own.

Caleb's teacher and I talked yesterday and she is so understanding and receptive about his challenges with his emotions and the things we'd like to happen in the classroom to help with the situation. I'm very happy with her. Today was day 2 and he has already forgotten his sweater at the playground and his book pouch in his desk. *sigh*

Today was the first day I had Brettley during the school day. He was at my dad's yesterday. Today he was finally brave enough to play in the toy area in the basement by himself without anyone down there and he had a blast. He helped me make supper and cut veggies for John and was very happy to snack on some veggies of his own.

School is back, hallelujah! :)

Carpe Diem

I'm kind of embarrassed that it's been almost 2 months to the day since I've blogged. What's been going on in the Bly house? Let's start with the youngest, I suppose.

Brettley is 3, and I kind of feel like that explains everything to do with him right now. In our house, it's not the 2s that are terrible, it's the 3s. Brettley's circumstances of birth were, shall we say, less than ideal. As a result, he's been spoiled a lot, and we are going through the process of trying to break him of that. I'm reasonably certain that he's plotting his revenge half of the time, but he's still just so stinkin' adorable. We're going to start patching his good eye soon to try to avoid any more eye surgeries, so hopefully that will go well. He is currently obsessed with The Lego Movie and would watch it over and over all day long if I let him. His favourite person in the whole world is Grandpa Mattson, so he's very excited to be spending a special day at Grandpa's tomorrow without his brothers.

Ty finished Kindergarten in June and, much to his teacher's frustration, I have opted to move him forward to grade 1 next year. We had very different ideas about what would be the most beneficial for him, but I did my research and talked to people who had been in similar situations and strongly felt that he'd be far better off going to grade 1 instead doing another year of Kindergarten. Ty is still one of the most hilarious people I've ever known. He keeps things real in our house, and man do I love him for it. This summer he's been helping me take care of my flowers, and he is very sad that his special orange flowers that he picked out all by himself aren't faring so well anymore. He is such a sweet little guy.

Caleb...*sigh* Caleb's first few weeks of meds went very well. He wasn't hurting anyone anymore and he was a lot more willing to hear people out before getting upset. Then he started travelling for most of July and since then they haven't been going so well. I'm sincerely hoping and praying that once he gets the routine of school back that things will get a bit easier for him. My poor sweet boy, my heart just aches for him as we go through this. I can't imagine being that young and losing control so violently. On a lighter note, he is THRILLED to be going to grade 3 this year. He finished Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and has been reading lots of books from the library. He's also gotten into making crafts. He loves all things history and space.

We had our family vacation last month. We spent over a week in Magrath, where my allergies were absolutely awful. Luckily, my friend/cousin-in-law suggested a medication rotation that actually worked pretty decently. While we were down there we went to my father-in-law's grave and had a good cry. We went swimming in Raymond. It was a cooler day, but we had lots of fun there and took along our oldest niece. John had his birthday, and we had a blast in Lethbridge together while the kids stayed with Grandma. We went to dinner at Firestone and it was just as amazing as the first time I was there, if not better. John's sister, Kathy, threw her big birthday bash for the kids and rented a whole theatre just for us to go see Rio 2. The boys LOVED getting to see a movie that way with their cousins, and it was a lot of fun. We took in town celebrations and by Sunday morning all 5 of us were sick, so we went home a day early so that we could sleep comfortably in our own beds.

On Tuesday we headed to North Battleford to stay with my uncle and aunt for a few days. We all went to the museum there and the kids had SO much fun seeing all of the old buildings and items in them. They also spent time in the pool and sprinkler and finally discovered the joys of the Kinect for the X-Box, since we don't have a Kinect for our's. It was super hot while we were there, but it was so nice to get to spend time with 2 of my most favourite people. We left there super early Friday morning so that I could attend my brother's mother-in-law's funeral, and then we finally got home the day after that. We were all very happy to be back home.

I got to attend Stake YW camp at the beginning of July. I managed to injure my leg on the first day, and we never did figure out how it happened. We had an AMAZING (!!!!!) fireworks show at camp on Canada Day, and I discovered the amazingness of a Nutella & Marshmallow Fluff sandwich. Seriously, it was so super yummy. I love serving the Young Women again, it's one of my most favourite places in the whole world to be.

So that's where we're at...

Yesterday evening, we found out that Robin Williams had died. It prompted me to again watch one of my favourite movies, which he happens to be in, Dead Poets Society. My brother and I used to love to watch that movie together a lot, and I still can't watch it without thinking about him. It makes me cry even more than most movies. I love it. This quote from the movie has always been a favourite of mine "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." And my other favourite, "Carpe. Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary."

So that will (hopefully) be my goal for now. To seize the day and make my life extraordinary!
